Educating Children
To some people educating your children while on the road may seem a daunting prospect. The first thing to recognise is that in the UK it is the right of every parent to be able to home educate their children. Home education has downsides as well as upsides. For example home educated children, particularly those that do not participate in activities with other children may suffer with a lack of social skills education, have difficulties making friendships and
miss out on co-constructive learning. On the other hand they can have excellent one-to-one teaching and targeted and specific learning.
On the road learning takes on a more lived experience. Later in the year we will be adding to this page after our overland trip to Mongolia and our experiences on the road with children. For now here are a few ideas:
Literacy
- Writing a daily journal recording the trip
- Contributing to the expedition blog
- Literacy work books from home
- Literacy work books from school
- Writing stories about the experience of travelling
- Learnimg mew languages
Numeracy (Mathematics)
- Budgetting - working out exchange rates, costs relative to the UK, how much pocket money is needed for treats, how much is spent on travel costs including food and petrol
- Mileage calculations - where is the nearest internet cafe or library
- Counting cars, trucks, particular landmarks
- Fuel consumption project - which country has the cheapest fuel?
- Singing and chanting timestables
- Maths worksheets provided by the school
The Arts
- Filming and editing the expedition
- Painting and drawing what we see on the journey
- Facilitating peer support workshops
- Seeing theatre and exhibitions from different countries
Physical education (PE)
- Hiking
- Morning yoga
- Swimming in rivers and pools where available
- Walking and sightseeing
- Pushing the truck if it does not start
Science
- Wildlife watching and recording
- Seeing the variety of farming methods in different countries
- Astronomy
- Visiting national parks
General life skills
- Cooking
- Sharing ideas with children from other cultures
- Meeting new people
- Broadening horizons
- Setting up, packing etc - teamwork
- Basic vehicle mechanics
- Learning about independance and looking after ourselves
